The first time I met artist Jack Beal, he said to the assembled painters at a workshop in Oneonta New York, “It is the artist’s job to create beauty.” Ever since then, these have been my watchwords as I sit in my studio, making paintings. It seems like so much in today’s society happens instantly. Good art (ok this is my opinion here, alright?) doesn’t happen quickley or easily. After all, if it was easy, everyone would do it. We need to take the time to examine and record things. Make something beautiful, even if the experience that led to the making of a particular painting was not so good.
Something to think about as you contemplate your next painting.
Till next time,
